Campaign for Action on Family Violence

The Campaign for Action on Family Violence, the It's not OK campaign, was initiated by the Taskforce for Action on Violence within Families which advises the government on family violence issues. The Campaign was launched in 2007 and is led by Family and Community Services and the Families Commission, in association with communities.

Campaign goals

The Campaign is about challenging attitudes and behaviour that tolerate any kind of family violence.  It is a community-driven effort to reduce family violence in New Zealand. The Campaign is increasing awareness and understanding of family violence and promoting change in behaviour.

Campaign tools

  • Community Action: A key part of the campaign is about supporting communities to develop local projects developed to fit thier local needs. The campaign has provided support to 147 local projects in four rounds of funding from the Community Action Fund and continues to provide funding for locally led projects.T
  • TV Advertisements: The Campaign has developed three sets of TV advertisements that support the work that is being led in communities. The key messages from the TV commercials are: Family Violence: It's not OK; It is OK to Ask for help and It is OK to Help.
  • An 0800 Family Violence Information Line (0800 456 450) provides self-help information and connects people to services where appropriate. It is available seven days a week, from 9am to 11pm, with an after-hours message redirecting callers in the case of an emergency.
  • Campaign website: The campaign website plays an important part in helping to mobilise New Zealanders. It contains information for personal change for people who are violent and people who influence them, as well as information for community engagement and for the media.
  • Media Advocacy: Media advocacy work conducted by the Campaign has resulted in the media reporting family violence in a more responsible way and has enables local family violence prevention spokespeople to get their messages into the media.
  • Creating Change toolkit: This resource is designed to help strengthen family violence prevention work. It includes learnings from the Campaign and examples of successful community action to help and inspire others to develop their own family violence prevention initiatives.
