Whānau Toko I Te Ora (WTITO)

Whānau Toko I Te Ora is an intensive home-based family parenting support programme for Māori whānau delivered by Te Ropu Wahine Māori Toko I Te Ora (The Māori Women’s Welfare League).

This programme is for whānau with children under five years old who have high needs. Whānau are usually referred to the Māori Women's Welfare League branch in the area by Māori community networks, community and government agencies, and other professionals.

The programme supports parenting based on a holistic approach that emphasises the growth and development of tamariki during the first five years of their life.

The programme seeks to:

  • improve and promote the wellbeing of tamariki
  • support positive parenting skills
  • develop family functioning and supporting relationships within whānau
  • enhance learning opportunities for tamariki.

The WTITO programme is provided to 126 whānau across eight rohe:

  • Gisborne - Te Tairawhiti
  • Flaxmere/Wairapara - Ikaroa
  • Northland - Te Tai Tokerau
  • Christchurch - Te Wai Pounamu
  • New Plymouth, Waitara, Whanganui - Aotea
