Local Services Mapping: Tauranga
Although rapid population growth means Tauranga is now one of New Zealand’s largest cities, many of its social service structures are still at provincial-town level. Demand for local social services currently outstrips available resources. An increasing number of Tauranga families experience stress caused by dealing with their children’s challenging behaviours, family violence, and a lack of affordable housing.
Family and Community Services worked together with the Family Agencies Coming Together (FACT) project to prepare this report. FACT held workshops, sent out questionnaires to service providers, and conducted interviews to gather feedback on service provision in Tauranga. As part of the LSM process they pinpointed service delivery gaps and problems for groups of families identified as having high needs.

- Group Special Education
- Housing New Zealand
- Maungatapu School
- Ministry of Education
- Older Persons Advocacy and Liaisons Services (OPALS)
- Strengthening Families provider network
- Te Whanau Kotahi
- And many other service providers to the Tauranga district.
Priority areas for action in Tauranga:
- Families whose children have challenging behaviour
- Families affected by family violence
- Families caring for older family members
- Families needing affordable housing
