Selwyn District is located in the middle of the eastern coast of the South Island. The district extends 150 kilometres west from the edge of Christchurch City to the Southern Alps and Arthur’s Pass National Park.

About 45% of Selwyn’s population (the total population at the 2006 census was 33,670 people) live in small towns and settlements, and the remainder live on farms and rural lifestyle blocks.
