Safer Wairarapa
The community of the Wairarapa decided during the latter part of 2008 and in early 2009 that they wished to develop a model that would enable the people of the Wairarapa region to work together to create a safer region for residents and people who visit here. To this end they discussed ways to enable this to happen in a manner where we would gain from exposure to national and international data, benchmarking and good practice.

Safer Wairarapa Community Objectives
Safer Wairarapa was formed with the following objectives;
- to develop a positive safety culture throughout the region
- to become part of the Safe Communities movement through accreditation to the Safer Communities Foundation New Zealand (SCFNZ) as a member of the International Safe Communities, World Health Organisation (WHO). This was achieved in 2010.
- to benefit through best practice and shared data resulting from membership of SCFNZ
- to work in a collaborative way that maximizes effort, minimizes duplication and shares information for the benefit of our community.
Project Scope
Safer Wairarapa has a wide range of government agencies and community organisations working collaboratively in a focused manner on agreed outcomes. The outcomes are connected to both unintentional and intentional injuries in the Wairarapa Region, within the Masterton, Carterton and South Wairarapa District Councils. Safer Wairarapa is a mechanism for advocating for, linking together, monitoring trends and progress and reporting on issues of safety.

- identifying and prioritizing opportunities/programmes for action
- advocating the needs of the region to those outside of the region who are able to assist with resources, support and advice.
Safer Wairarapa Coalition is responsible for:
- identifying where workstreams can collaborate
