Local Services Mapping: Murupara

Murupara community is a Bay of Plenty township, adjoining Kaingaroa Forest and Te Urewera National Park. The town’s population is youthful compared to the rest of New Zealand. The population has dropped following significant job losses in the primary local industry – forestry – and subsequent high levels of unemployment.

This report presents the results of a community initiative, Murupara Dreaming, which identified Murupara’s strengths, problems, and opportunities. Many community groups and individuals contributed to this project under the leadership of a joint community/government steering group - Network Murupara. The LSM process allowed the community to identify gaps, overlaps, and opportunities in local social services.

Key participants in the LSM process included:

  • Government agencies and social service providers
  • Murupara community
  • Te Runanga o Ngati Manawa
  • Whakatane District Council

Priority areas for action in Murupara:

  • Economic development
  • Wellbeing of local people
  • Promotion and revitalisation of the town.
