Invercargill, which includes Invercargill City and Bluff, is situated on the south coast of the South Island, with an area of 49,142 hectares.
Invercargill City celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2006; and the port town of Bluff is even older – it’s the oldest European settlement in New Zealand.
During the community consultation process for this report, 14 focus groups were held on specific topics and across numerous sectors. Topics covered by the focus groups included: parenting/family support, family violence, mental health, disability sector, older persons sector, Māori providers, healthy lifestyle choices, addition services, safer communities, financial wellbeing, youth and youth workers, migrant services, and housing.
Key priorities identified by the community:
- Relieving stress experienced by caregivers through improved opportunities for respite care.
- Addressing the need for supported accommodation for youth aged 15-18 and for people with mild to moderate mental health issues; and emergency accommodation for single women and youth in crisis.
- Providing educational opportunities and support for teen parents.
- Ensuring access to appropriate residential drug and alcohol services.
- Identifying opportunities for outcomes-based funding and contracting.
- Developing a shared, web-based information service for the Southland region.
