Dunedin is the largest landmass city in New Zealand and consists of many small and diverse communities. The city’s main sources of employment are the retail trade, health and community services, manufacturing, and education. Although Dunedin has an average level of socio-economic deprivation, clusters of households and families experience poverty.
Sources of information for the community report included interviews with community groups, responses by social service providers to a Local Services Mapping questionnaire, and local and central government data and reports. The report’s research and findings were reviewed by government and non-government agencies to ensure they reflected Dunedin’s communities accurately.
