Local Services Mapping: Auckland City
Auckland City sits at the heart of Auckland Region, and is New Zealand’s largest city. The city is divided into seven wards (Avondale-Roskill, Eastern Bays, Eden-Albert, Hauaki Gulf Isands, Hobson, Tamaki-Maungakiekie, and Western Bays). Each ward is home to a number of distinct communities. Auckland City has around 187 different ethnic groups living within its boundaries.
A key theme of this community report is the importance of partnering with communities to develop local solutions that build on existing strengths. Although this report focuses on priority area of concern for families in Auckland City, it also acknowledges the many strengths that can be found throughout the city’s local communities. In particular, there is a strong network of community and wha-nau support services that makes a significant contribution to the social fabric of Auckland City.
This report identifies three priority areas for action for service providers in Auckland City:
- Parenting support that helps parents be confident, informed and actively engaged in their children’s development
- Out-of-school services that help young people (aged 10-14) thrive
- Families and young people are able to access the social services they need.
The work for this community report was carried out as a partnership of Auckland City council, the Auckland City Local Services Mapping Steering Group, and Family and Community Services, which is part of the Ministry of Social Development.
