Young Mother Builds Self Esteem through PAFT
Getting involved in the Parents as First Teachers (PAFT) programme opened up a whole new world of support and friendship for one young mother who felt ashamed about her family circumstances.
May Smith* a young parent from Tamaki, Auckland wrote to her Parents as First Teachers educator and told her how PAFT has helped build her self esteem so she was able to connect with her community more.
"I can't afford to take my child to creche and was worried that I wasn't providing enough stimulation at home. I didn't join any mothers' groups because I am ashamed of my house and how poor we are. I knew that eventually I would have to host something at my house and I didn't want anyone to judge me and where I live.
"I didn't even want to join PAFT because of this too but it was my only link and my Parent Educator didn't make me feel embarrassed. She introduced me to some other mothers in my suburb and they invited me over. They didn't have much either and they didn't even care and they were happy.
"I feel so stupid. I have come to understand that kids don't care where you live, as long as you can provide a happy and safe place for them to be. I felt so much more comfortable and ours kids love playing together. I am pleased my child sees faces other than my own.'
Sina Umaga, PAFT team leader said this response is typical from the stories the PAFT team receive from parents who have benefited from the programme.
"PAFT provides support to parents so they can take a more active role in the early development of their children. Part of this is to make sure that parents themselves feel confident so they can connect with others families in their neighbourhood and build a support network," said Sina.
