Social Work Study Awards Continue to Deliver
Applications for the 2010 study awards close on 16 October 2009.
The NGO social work awards provide financial assistance to community workers, and their employers, as they work towards a qualification in social work. They aim to improve the social work knowledge base of those that work with children and families in the community.
Captain Allan Bateman who leads the Salvation Army Ministry in Palmerston North believes that gaining a social work qualification improved the overall practice of the social workers he employs.
His Ministry provides a number of social services including a food bank, supportive accommodation for men and women, counselling, family assistance, disability support and addiction support.
"The NGO Social Work Study Awards enabled us to employ another person on the day each week our social worker was away studying to complete her social work degree," he said.
"It was also really important to Gwenda, my employee, that she was able to keep her position while she was studying."
Captain Bateman also said that that studying for a qualification in social work was well worth it as it raised the skill level and awareness of social workers and linked them into others who work in the field.
"The course puts them all in the same pool together. It provides them with exposure to other areas and gives them an opportunity to bring the issues they grapple with to the course to be discussed in a best practise way,"
