Funky Monkeys SKIP Challenge

Over 300 parents were challenged to practice a SKIP strategy presented to them in a mystery envelope before the Funky Monkeys concert in Palmerston North last month.

Te Aroha Noa SKIP initiative organised the concert and placed SKIP messages into sealed envelopes for all the parents in the audience. The messages included: ‘Say lots more positive than negative things and praise them when they are doing well.’ All the parents were challenged to practise these by the end of the day and throughout the week.

Some envelopes also contained Pak n Save, subway and petrol vouchers and there were spot prizes based on activities that parents and children could do together. These included cookie cutters, jumbo cards, craft packs, colouring books and felts.

Over 1000 people attended the concert with the biggest turn out of Dads that Te Aroha Noa has ever seen at one of its SKIP events. "It was a great way to get the SKIP messages out to the families both verbally and in written form and the parents were very excited about their mystery envelopes," says concert organiser Theresa Lambert.

Marion Moore from Sport Manawatu (Active movement coordinator) also attended the concert and got all the parents and children involved in games, rhymes and movement to give parents ideas and about how activity can help the children develop mentally and physically.
