The Family Start programme was established in 1998 as part of a wider strategy to strengthen families. It provides
intensive, home-based support services for families with high needs, to ensure that their children have the best possible start in life.

Ahuru Mowai and Born to Learn Training
All Family Start whānau workers receive one week’s initial training in the use of the two Ahuru Mōwai and Born to Learn curriculum manuals. Refresher training is also available for staff who have completed initial training.
Training dates for 2008:
- Initial training, held at the Brentwood Hotel, Wellington.

- Refresher training
New Refresher Training dates - All Refresher to be held at the Brentwood Hotel, Wellington
3-5 March 2009
26-28 May 2009 - Managers and Supervisors training, held at the Brentwood Hotel, Wellington.
2-3 June 2009

Family Start/Early Start Early Learning Programme
This programme provides financial assistance to families who are enrolled in selected Family Start or Early Start programmes to enable their children to participate in Early Childhood Education (ECE).

Family Start Study Awards
The Family Start Study Awards are for Family Start employees who want to complete a qualification in social work, health or early childhood education at level 6 or higher.
The application round for the 2009 study year opens on 21 July 2008 and closed on 12 September 2008.
