E Tu Whanau Ora  Programme of Action for Addressing Family Violence 2008-2013

Whānau-ora for all whānau members arising from strength, safety, identity, integrity and prosperity.

This programme of action was developed by the Maori Reference Group as part of the Taskforce for Action on Family Violence ongoing programme of work.

The programme includes ways of addressing the quality, and diversity of approaches in eliminating violence within Maori whanau.  It was developed after extensive consultation within the Maori world which included a whanau summit of Māori leaders, academics and iwi and key non government organisations, social service providers and a series of regional hui.

The report includes an overview of broad Maori aspirations regarding whanau, a stocktake of the current situation, principles, the high level goals and actions to be taken over the next five years and a framework of specific actions that relate to the high level goals.

The long term goal of the Māori Programme of Action is  All whānau have healthy, respectful, stable relationships free from violence

E Tu Whanau Ora was developed by the Maori Reference Group after extensive consultation with the Maori community.

It represents the culmination of a great deal of thought and hard work from iwi, hapū, whanau – and shows their commitment to working towards whanau ora – strength, safety, identity and prosperity for all Maori.

This included the important E Tu Hui at Hopuhopu marae in April 2008 which brought together Maori leaders to discuss whanau violence and to harness their mana and commitment to addressing this issue.

This was followed by a programme of work at grassroots level including regional hui across the country to ensure all voices were heard and local solutions were identified and embraced.
