Local Services Mapping: Waitakere City
Waitakere City has a national reputation for its collaborative work to identify and address local wellbeing issues. Its population is increasing rapidly, placing pressure on the environment, housing, and service provision. A small but significant number of Waitakere’s residents, including children, face high levels of deprivation.
The report’s key priority areas were developed through community consultation hosted by key strategic broker agencies, network agencies and individual interviews. The LSM process benefited greatly from the strength of relationships built up over time, especially through the Waitakere Collaboration Project. Information was gathered through a number of central and local government reports, and a stocktake of community organisations complied by an independent researcher. The LSM process is now an integral component of the development of the Plan for the City.
Key participants in the LSM process included:
- Auckland University of Technology
- Community strategic brokers – WAVES, Community Waitakere and Waitakere Healthlink
- LSM Steering Group (made up of Waitakere City Council and community and government representatives, including WDHB and Department of Internal Affairs)
- Waitakere City Council
- Waitakere social service providers.
Priority areas for action in Waitakere City:
- Family violence
- Accessible and appropriate youth services
- Appropriate housing
- Sustainable community development
- Child poverty
- Services for older adults.
