Local Services Mapping: Tararua
Tararua District lies on the North Island’s south-east coast. It has a relatively small population spread across many towns and settlements. This creates challenges in maintaining and keeping local services and infrastructure services. However, Tararua’s community agencies demonstrate great commitment to delivering high quality social services.
This report is a result of collaboration between Family and Community Services and a local steering group set up to guide the LSM process. In order to set a manageable focus, the Tararua Steering Group developed a list of priorities based on their knowledge of the community. They tested this against the information gathered through focus groups, a social services provider questionnaire, and analysis of statistical data and reports.
Key participants in the LSM process included:
- Child, Youth and Family
- Dannevirke Community Board
- Ministry of Education
- Rangitane o Tamaki nui a Rua
- Safer Community Council
- Tararua District Council
- Tararua REAP
- Work and Income.
Priority areas for action in Tararua:
- Parenting support
- Educational under-achievement
- Youth support
- Dependencies
- Access to services
- Family violence.
