Local Services Mapping: Rodney
Rodney District is to the north of Auckland, between Kaipara Harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Most of the district’s land is used for farming, horticulture, viticulture, forestry, or is divided into lifestyle blocks. Rodney’s popularity as a holiday and retirement destination, plus its proximity to Auckland, has resulted in fairly rapid population growth in recent years. At the 2006 census, Rodney’s population was 89,560 – an increase of 17.6% from the 2001 census.
The Rodney District LSM process identified five key social issues, which were adopted by the Rodney Social Wellbeing Advisory Group (SWAG), a strategic advisory group comprising government agencies and community experts. Franklin’s five priority areas for action are:
- Participation and wellbeing of older adults
- Participation and wellbeing of young people
- Family violence prevention
- Sustainable development – connected communities
- Affordable and appropriate housing
The report identifies actions that are either underway or are being considered to address these priorities.
