Local Services Mapping: Kapiti Coast
Kapiti Coast District consists of towns and settlements spread across 40 kilometres of coastal plain. There are varying levels of affluence and deprivation in its communities. An unusual age profile – residents aged 60 years and over outnumber children aged less than 15 years – reflects the district’s popularity as a retirement destination.
Family and Community Services worked together with a local steering group set up to guide the LSM process in Kapiti. The Kapiti Steering Group comprised representatives from central and local government, as well as community providers and agencies. The group developed a list of priorities based on its knowledge of the district, then tested these priorities against the information gathered. The list was refined to five priorities, which broadly focused on families with dependent children.
Key participants in the process included:
- Capital and Coast District Health Board
- Child, Youth and Family
- House of Hope
- Kapiti Coast District Council
- Kapiti Coast Safer Community Trust
- Kapiti Coast Community Health Group Trust
- Ministry of Education
- Te Runanga o Ati Awa ki Whakarongotai
- Work and Income.
Five areas were prioritised for LSM action at this stage in the Kapiti Coast District:
- Access to mental health and alcohol and other drug services
- Transport to support services
- Support services that strengthen parent and child relationships
- Additional kaupapa Maori services
- Emergency housing.
Other areas identified as significant but that will not be addressed by this LSM report:
- More general practitioners (GPs)
- Lower-cost GP visits, especially after hours
- More sexual health education, promotion and services
- Better collaboration between providers
- More and better information about what is available.
