Local Services Mapping: Horowhenua

The Horowhenua District stretches up the western coast of the lower North Island. It is nestled between the Tararua ranges to the east and the Tasman Sea to the west.

LSM consultation identified that an effective strategic infrastructure to support social services in the Horowhenua needs to take advantage of the physical, intellectual and financial resources already available here. Existing local networks and agencies provide a base on which to further develop the community’s social services sector.

The Horowhenua community identified three desired outcomes/results:

  1. A connected social services sector. The LSM consultation identified that improved understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders within the social services sector, and improve alignment of funding of local issues, would assist social services providers with their work.
  2. Older People ageing with dignity. The Horowhenua community recognises that the increasing proportion of those over age 65 have both specific needs and contributions to make. Some are still in work and some are volunteers, while others require specialised services.
  3. Young people making positive choices. The focus of the report is on the district’s young people (aged 12 to 24). What a young person experiences during these years can significantly affect their long-term outcomes, with implications for both them and the wider community. It is crucial that these years are part of a positive learning experience across all relationships, including family, school and peer groups.
