Local Services Mapping: Gore

Gore District’s boundaries surround the town of Gore in the south-east of the South Island. Its level of socio-economic deprivation is lower than New Zealand as a whole. Reflecting the general trend in rural communities, the population is in decline and this trend is expected to continue. The district also has fewer young adults and greater numbers of older people than elsewhere in New Zealand.

Family and Community Services and the Community Networking Trust worked collaboratively to compile the report. In addition to information gathering they also built relationships with local stakeholders. This included public speaking engagements, taking part in existing networks, and a combined hui with Ngai Tahu Runaka representatives and local Maori living in the area.

Key participants in the LSM process included:

  • Community Networking Trust, and Community Connections Centre
  • Gore District Council
  • Gore Strengthening Families Management Committee
  • Hokonui Runaka
  • He Oranga
  • Gore and Districts Healthy Communities Steering Committee.

Priority areas for action in Gore District:

  • Mechanisms that enhance parent education and in-home support
  • Improving income levels for Maori
  • Sustainable health programmes and services
  • Boosting opportunities and outlook for young people.
