Work and family life
Many of us juggle our work and family responsibilities. Finding a good balance can be tricky, but the rewards are worth it. For some parents, it will mean reducing the hours that they work, or finding a new job with less demands on their time. For some it will mean finding a suitable carer – such as a grandparent – or a child-care centre. The right approach for your family is whatever works for you.
Returning to work
If you are going back to work after having a baby, you’ll probably feel a mixture of excitement, nervousness, guilt, and stress. Try to plan ahead, to make the move back to work a little easier:
- Think about your new routine before you go back to work. There may be things you can begin to do now, while you’re at home.
- Spend as much time with family and friends as you can. Ask them for help and advice if you need it.
- Make time to catch up with your partner. You’re probably both working, trying to keep the house in shape and looking after the kids. You’re each other’s closest support person.
- Find out about family friendly policies at your workplace. You may be able to take sick leave when your child is unwell, for example.
- Try to leave your work stress at work. This article from the Raising Children Network has some tips to help
