Safety in the sun

Children love to play outside, and their bodies need vitamin D from sunshine. But they don’t need very much – as little as 15 minutes per day of sunshine gives kids their daily dose of vitamin D. The sun’s rays can be harmful, especially between 11am and 4pm, so try to plan outdoor activities for early morning and late afternoon.

The best protection against sunburn are a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, protective clothing (a long-sleeved t-shirt and sunglasses) and shade.

If you are going to be out in the sun for long periods – and who can resist a day at the beach! – put SPF30 broad-spectrum sunscreen on your family 15 minutes before you go out, and regularly reapply through the day. Take a large beach umbrella to provide a cool, shady place to sit.

The Cancer Society runs a SunSmart accreditation programme for schools – encourage your child’s school to get involved and promote sun safety.

See the SunSmart website for more information on safety in the sun.
