Safety at school
Our kids should feel safe and secure at school, just as they do at home. For the most part they are safe, as they are supervised by trained adults and surrounded with friends. There are some things we can do to keep them safe and reduce the chance of accident or injury.
Start by finding a way to get to school safely – whether that’s driving, walking in a group with an adult (walking bus), or cycling.
Talk to your kids about choosing good friends carefully. Bullying behaviour can be frightening and upsetting for kids, so help them be prepared to deal with it. The No Bully and the Ministry of Education websites have tips on talking to your kids about bullying.
What can I do?
Knowing your child’s school and teacher will help your child to feel safe at school, so visit regularly. Get to know the staff, kids and other parents. If you have time, volunteer to help – in a working bee or reading regularly to the children. You might be able to be involved as a member of the PTA or Board of Trustees.
Always talk to your child’s teacher if you have any concerns about safety at school.
