Coping in a crisis

A crisis can happen to any family at any time. Having strong foundations in place can help you to deal with the impact of a traumatic event.

There are no right or wrong ways to react to crisis – you may feel angry or frightened, or just confused. If you feel unable to cope, it’s important to find someone who can help you and your family to stay strong.

Try to spend time with your family and friends. Get plenty of rest and look after your body by eating well and exercising. You may not feel like taking care of yourself right now, but anxiety and stress get worse when you’re tired and hungry. The Red Cross website looks at physical and emotional ways you may respond to a crisis.

There are many organisations in New Zealand that can help you in times of crisis. You may find talking to Victim Support or the Citizens Advice Bureau really helps. The Family Services Directory can help you find other organisations.

Your children will learn how to cope in a crisis by watching you. Try to gather your thoughts before talking to the kids. Acknowledge that you’re upset, but let them know that the situation is going to be okay. If possible, stick to family routines. This will help your child to feel secure. The Raising Children website has more on helping your child to deal with crisis.

Your child may want to talk to someone outside the family about the situation. What’s Up and Kidsline offer phone counselling to young New Zealanders.
