Directory Help

"The purpose of the Family Services Directory is to connect people with providers who can help"

What is the Family Services Directory?

The Family Services Directory is a searchable online database.

It lists information about family support organisations and the services/programmes they offer to support New Zealand families (we call the organisations in the Family Services Directory “providers”).

The purpose of the Family Services Directory is to connect people with providers who can help them to cope with common issues and problems.

The A-Z of Services lists services alphabetically. So if you are looking for budgeting assistance, look under B, or if you are looking for counselling, you will find it listed under C.

When you select a service from the A-Z list, it will automatically populate the Your Search box.

The Your Search box will reflect any region, district(s), service(s) and keyword(s) you specify, so you can review your search criteria before you press Go.

Directory - Results

When you select Go, the search engine will display a summary page of results.  The results show a list of Providers whose services/programmes best fit what you searched for.

  • filter the results to show only providers physically located in a region/district
  • select certain results to review later (Your Selection)
  • print one page or the full set of results

Tips, Tricks and Printing

Keyword Searching

If you are searching for a particular phrase, it can help to enter the phrase within quote marks
eg. “well child”

You can use the wildcard symbol (*) to search for words with similar roots
eg. disab* will return results for disabled and disability

If you do not get any results for the keyword(s) you enter, try another word or phrase with a similar meaning, or try the A-Z of Services

Troubleshooting

If your search returns no results, or if you end up with different results than expected:

  • try searching on a whole region (eg. Wellington) or several districts, rather than just one
  • try searching with just keywords and a location
  • check the spelling of any keywords

Display Options

You can change the number of results you can see on one page.  Choose from 10, 20, 30, or 50 or results to display, and select Change to update the display.

Display options

Physical Location Filter

When you search on a location, the results will include any provider who offers services and/or programmes in that location, regardless of where they offer them from.

If you wish to narrow the results to show only providers physically present in that location, use the Physical Location Filter.  The filter will exclude providers such as helplines and head offices who offer services nationwide.

Your Selection

View your selection

There is a checkbox next to each listing on the Results page of a search.  Select the providers you wish to review by checking the appropriate checkboxes, and then select the View Your Selection link.
You can select providers across multiple pages, and there is no limit on the number of providers you can select.

Printing

There is a Print Friendly option so you can print the Results page, Provider details, Your Selection, etcetera without the text cutting off.

The Print Friendly option is located in the toolbox at the top right of each page in the Directory.
When selected, it will show the details you want to print in a new page.  You can then select Print from your usual browser menu.

Note: the Print option in the toolbox will print the current page as it appears in your browser.  It may include any frames/images and may cut off the text.  We recommend using the Print Friendly option.
